Despite Liverpool’s greater closeness to Everton, their bitter feud with Manchester United is considered more of a rivalry.
The two giants of football continue to battle between themselves for amounting silverware every single season and there is always rising emotions on the pitch.
Both would be considered “media darlings” and “global commodities” as every day they become less of a football team and more of a business on the whole.
Though despite the glamour that both clubs have, the rivalry and bad blood between the two still exists from way back.
How was the rivalry formed?
Despite not being quite next door, the two clubs rivalry was fuelled by the proximity of two major English cities.
But unlike other derbies, it has become more relevant since both endured fantastic successes on the pitch, with both frequent winners domestically and in European competitions.
Between them, they share 38 league titles, 8 European Cups, 4 EUFA Cups, 4 Super Cups, 19 FA Cups, 13 League Cups and 36 FA Community shields – and breathe.
The list of accolades is almost never ending and goes some way to show how good both teams have been since their individual inceptions.
Man United have in total won more major trophies in comparison to Liverpool but the battle for silverware between the two every season gets better and better.
Over the years, there has been noticeable player rivalries in the derby, with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard vocal in their hatred for one another’s team.
Then when Luis Suarez racially abused Man United’s Patrice Evra, the rivalry again escalated to a whole new level entirely.
Head to head
Both teams have always been considered among the very best, not just in England but the world too.
It comes as no surprise to see a tight head-to-head record between the two sides but Man United do have the advantage with 88 wins, compared to Liverpool’s 76.
With 66 draws between them, the two have faced off 230 times since 1894, a sign of how historic and special both these teams are.
What is it like to watch a game between Man United and Liverpool?
I was lucky enough to speak to Man United fan George Bennett, who experienced a game between Man United and Liverpool back in March 2018.
Here is his view from the stand during Man United’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool last season.
“The tension was palpable and you could feel the nerves building up more than ever when you walked up the stairs and into the colossus arena.”
“Old Trafford was painted in red shirts and the perpetual chants continued until the whistle marked the beginning of a fierce battle.”
“Liverpool were silenced by two Marcus Rashford goals but the atmosphere was electric and you could see how momentous it was for the United fans to defeat their fiercest rivals.”
“It was an experience like very few others and it’s definitely one I’d love to experience again.”
Where does it rank in our top ten?
As voted by our followers on Twitter, the North West derby match between Man United and Liverpool is joint-fourth with the Old Firm Derby.
To be considered alongside one of the biggest derbies in football shows exactly the type of game Man United vs Liverpool is normally like.
It will forever be a tightly contested affair, with good, loud fans there to support their team through it.
